The image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help had long been venerated on the Isle of Crete. The inhabitants of that island, fleeing a Turkish invasion, took it with them to Rome. By the invocation of Mary under the title of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, the ship transporting Her holy image was saved from a terrible storm. In 1876, Pope Pius IX erected an Archconfraternity in St. Alphonsus’ church under the title of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Today the Blessed Virgin is invoked by this name throughout the Western Church.

O Mother of Perpetual Help, grant that I may always invoke thy most powerful name. For thy name is help in life, salvation in death. Ah, Mary most pure, Mary most sweet, let thy name henceforth be the breath of my life. Tarry not O Lady to come to my help whenever I call upon thee: for in all the wants which shall befall me, I will never cease to call upon thee, and to repeat again and again: Mary, Mary! What comfort, what sweetness, what confidence does my soul feel at the very mention of thy name. In the very thought of thee, I thank the Lord for having given thee for my good this name so sweet, so amiable, so powerful. But merely to pronounce thy name is not enough for me. I will do so out of love: I wish that love may remind me to call thee always my Mother of Perpetual Help. Amen.

Mother dear, O pray for me! Whilst far from heav'n and thee. I wander in a fragile bark, O'er life's tempestuous sea. O Virgin Mother, from thy throne, So bright in bliss above. Protect thy child and cheer my path With thy sweet smile of love. Mother dear, remember me! And never cease thy care, 'Till in heaven eternally, Thy love and bliss I share. Mother dear, O pray for me! Should pleasure's siren lay. E'er tempt thy child to wander far From Virtue's path away. When thorns beset life's devious way, And darkling waters flow. Then Mary aid thy weeping child, Thyself a mother show. Mother dear, remember me! And never cease thy care, 'Till in heaven eternally, Thy love and bliss I share.
