The blessing of the sick by ministers of the Church is a very ancient custom, rooted in imitation of Christ Himself and His apostles. The blessing may be given by touching the throat of each person with two candles blessed on the Feast of the Purification of Mary (February 2 - Candlemas) and which have been joined together in the form of a cross. As the priest places the candles on the throat of each person, he says: “Per intercessionem Sancti Blasii, episcopi et martyris, liberet te Deus a malo gutturis, et a quolibet alio malo. In nomine Patris, et Filii +, et Spiritus Sancti. Amen.“ “Through the intercession of Saint Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you free from every disease of the throat, and from every other disease. In the name of the Father and of the Son, + and of the Holy Spirit.”
