The Five Joyful Mysteries

 

The First Joyful Mystery - The Annunciation

Our Father

And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God into a city of Galilee,
called Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph,
of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
 Luke 1:26-27

And the angel being come in, said unto her:
Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

Who having heard, was troubled at his saying,
and thought with herself what manner of salutation this should be

The Second Joyful Mystery - The Visitation  

Our Father

And Mary rising up in those days, went into the hill country with haste
into a city of Juda.  And she entered into the house of Zachary,
and saluted Elizabeth.
Luke 1:39-40

And it came to pass, that when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary,
the infant leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost

The Third Joyful Mystery - The Nativity

 

Our Father

And it came to pass, that when they were there, her days were accomplished,
that she should be delivered
 Luke 2:6

And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him up in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

The Fourth Joyful Mystery - The Presentation

 

Our Father

And after the days of her purification, according to the law of Moses, were accomplished,
they carried him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord:

 And behold there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Ghost was in him.

The Fifth Joyful Mystery - The Finding of Jesus in the Temple

Our Father

And his parents went every year to Jerusalem, at the solemn day of the pasch, 
And when he was twelve years old, they going up into Jerusalem,
according to the custom of the feast,

The Five Sorrowful Mysteries 

 

The First Sorrowful Mystery - The Agony in the Garden

Our Father

Then Jesus came with them into a country place which is called Gethsemani;
and he said to his disciples: Sit you here, till I go yonder and pray. 
And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee,
he began to grow sorrowful and to be sad.
Matthew 26:36-37

stay you here, and watch with me.

The Second Sorrowful Mystery - The Scourging at the Pillar

 

Our Father

And straightway in the morning, the chief priests
holding a consultation with the ancients and the scribes and the whole council,
binding Jesus, led him away, and delivered him to Pilate.
 And Pilate asked him: Art thou the king of the Jews?
But he answering, saith to him: Thou sayest it.

Mark 15:1-2

Jesus answered: My kingdom is not of this world.
If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would certainly strive
that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now my kingdom is not from hence.

The Third Sorrowful Mystery - The Crowning with Thorns 

  

Our Father

 And the soldiers led him away into the court of the palace,
and they called together the whole band: 
And they clothed him with purple, and platting a crown of thorns,
 they put it upon him.

And stripping him, they put a scarlet cloak about him.
Matthew 27:28

and a reed in his right hand.
And bowing the knee before him, they mocked him, saying:

The Fourth Sorrowful Mystery - The Carrying of the Cross

 

Our Father

And he said to all: If any man will come after me, let him deny himself,
and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
 Luke 9:23

The Fifth Sorrowful Mystery - The Crucifixion

 

Our Father

And when they were come to the place which is called Calvary,
they crucified him there; and the robbers,
one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

But they, dividing his garments, cast lots.

The First Glorious Mystery - The Resurrection

 

Our Father

Amen, amen I say to you, that you shall lament and weep,
but the world shall rejoice; and you shall be made sorrowful,
but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.

The Third Glorious Mystery - The Descent of the Holy Spirit

The Fourth Glorious Mystery - The Assumption

The Fifth Glorious Mystery - The Coronation

Our Father

Who is she that cometh forth as the morning rising, fair as the moon,
