Lenten Reflections

by Joachim Chukwudi

Retreat as the name implies is a time of withdrawal from the noise and activity of busy life into a quiet place and or self for purpose of study, meditation and prayer. It is also a time of abstinence, discerning the will of God in our life, a time of total change from our evil and bad ways to seek the face of God and to do good.

Lent is not only a time of fast from food but also a time to feast on virtues!
Fast from judging others, feast on Christ dwelling in them.
Fast from the emphasis on difference, feast on unity of life.
Fast from apparent darkness, feast on the reality of light.
Fast from the thoughts of illness, feast on the healing power of God.
Fast from the words that pollute, feast on phrases that purify.
Fast from dis content, feast on gratitude.
Fast from anger, feast on patience.
Fast from antagonism, feast on love.
Fast from pessimism,feast on optimism.
Fast from worry, feast on divine providence.
Fast from complaining, feast on appreciation.
Fast from negatives, feast on affirmatives.
Fast from unrelenting pressures, feast on unceasing prayer.
Fast from hostility, feast on peace.
Fast from bitterness, feast on forgiveness.
Fast from self concern, feast on compassion for others.
Fast from personal anxiety, feast on confidence.
Fast from discouragement, feast on hope.
Fast from lack, feast on contentment.
Fast from inadequecies, feast on blessings.
Fast from facts that depress, feast on realities that uplift.
Fast from thoughts that weaken, feast on promises that inspire.
Fast from shadow of sorrow, feast on the sunlight of serenity.
Fast from idle gossip, feast on purposeful silence.
Fast from problems that overwhelm, feast on assurance that supports.

The best fasting is to abstain from sin.
Give up bitterness; turn to forgiveness.
Give up hatred, return evil for good.
Give up negativism,be positive.
Give up complaining, be grateful.
Give up pessimism, be an optimist.
Give up harsh judgements, think kindly thoughts.
Give up worry, trust divine providence.
Give up discouragement, be full of hope.
Give up anger, be more patient.
Give up pettiness, be more mature.
Give up gloom, enjoy the beauty around you.
Give up jealousy, pray for trust.
Give up gossiping, control your thoughts.
Give up sin turn to virtue.

People have over the years tried them and they been fruitful. You can try them too and a trial will convince you.

Little penances (we can do) for the Lent.
Decide not to go out on outing days.
Pray extra Rosary, the Sorrowful Mystery.
Be at meditation long before time.
Decide not to watch exciting film.
Reduce your talking and shouting.
Do a charitable deed today for the benefit of another.
Refused to feel angry all day.
Abstain from favorite drinks.
Do not eat in between meals, except on health grounds.
Read the Scripture for 20 minutes everyday.
Make a private visit to the Blessed Sacrament.
Listen to others without contraditing.
No perfumes.
Do extra labour.
Give out what you do not need.
Make a little sacrifice for someone.
